CLASHING OF TOURNEYS
TENNIS DEPUTATION FROM MAS
TEUTON.
With a view to preventing any clashing of dates for tennis tournaments, a deputation from the Masterton Club waited 1 on the. Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association, at the annual meeting last night. Monsignor M'Kenna stated that the Masterton Club had held a Wairarapa tourney on tile 22nd January for many years, and as satisfaction had always been given to tennis players in connection with this the claim,to have this day set apart and avoid clashing with other tourneys was one that should be favourably considered by the association. The restriction of competitions to certain' dates should be left to a controlling body, as was done in the case of other sports.* Everything possible' should be done to encourage the game, and one direction in which this could be done was in controlling allocations as he had suggested. Mr. H. M. Boddington pointed out that twenty-two tourneys had been conducted by the Masterton Club, and he considered it a fair thing to ask the Wellington Association to make a. recommendation to the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association that the control of the allocation of dates as in. other sports should apply to tennis tourneys. The deputation also stated that two acres of ground • had been acquired at Masterton, and this would provide for ten full courts and two singW courts, with room for a cottage and pavilion ,and space for other games.
After discussing the matter, the meeting decided that it be a recommendation to the New Zealand Association that not more than one tourney be granted to nny clubs on the same day within a reasonable area. The " incoming- committee was also nsked to bear in mind the fact that the Masterton Club hti'd conducted n Waivnwpo. toui'namnnt nh the 22nd January for twenty-three ye&m.
