THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By "Sir Lancelot.")
The Masterton ftacirig Club should have a record Spring Meeting at Opaki on Thursday and Saturday, provided the weather conditions are favourable. The number and quality of the competitors engaged is quite up to the average. . Whichever is considered the best of the two-year-olds will probably bo sent out favourite for the Trial Stakes, five furlongs. The Hawkes Bay-owned Grotesque. (Absurd —Bron2e) may be the moat fancied. Of the three-year-olds engaged Kildee alid Happy Days may be the best. Mr. W. H, Kemball will be represented by Dunedin, who has notdone much since hfe rail second in the Breeders' Plate at Randwick twelve months ago. Falstaff and Fisher, second to Miss Maid in the. Dominion Hack Handicap' at Otaki, may be the best of those in the Jumpers' Handicap. Form at Napier Park arid Hastings points to Miss Gold and Rouen as likely to run prominently in the Flying Handicap. The latter only lias the same weight he won with, and may be actual favourite.
In the Lawn Handicap, Miss Maid and Bitters, each of whom ran first and second at Otaki, will probably claim the attention of backers. The first-named is conceding 151b, but her form is much the bettel-. She ran second to Uouen when giving away 121b. When Bitters won tie was receiving a stone from Explorer. Mr. Kemball has two horses in every race except the Trial. It is reported that Boiletter and Tenterfleld will both rtili in the Cup. Kiigoiir, second to Mclyneux at Otaki, and Dainty Step, who won on the second day of the Maori Meeting, may g<?t in the money. The Hawkes Bay winner Lord Astolat will have to carry 8.13—101b more than ho won with at Hastings—in the Lansdowne Handicap. They are not a g6od lot, and he may win again. Strategy, second in the- New Lynn Hack Handicap at Ellerslie, may also get in the money.
Matty, who defeated Moutoa Ivanova and Nobleman at Otaki, is well in the Grandstand Handicap with 7.12, and so is Matatane, a solid miler, with 8.3. The latter ran second at Hawkes Bay, and the i'ace there would, probably improve her,. The bracket Vasilkov and Martian Miss will probably carry most money in the Fordell Handicap, five fnflohgs. Other .smart beginners engaged are Bon' ny Briar and Siciise. -
'Weights for the Stewards' Handicap ar« due on the 18th inst.
