CRICKET

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

MEETS

The meeting of tho Management Committee of the -Wellington Cricket Association was held last night, Mr. C. G. Wilson presiding.

Tho Ground Committee reported that it. had allotted the following practice wickets :—Wellington North. 2; Thorndon, 2; Old Boys, 2; Wellington East, 2; Y.M;C.A., 2; Boys' Institute, 2; St. Patrick's College, Central Mission, Poneke, Murphy's, and Marist Brothers, 1 each. The Chairman said that the wickets would be ready for practice tonight, and matches would commence next Saturday.

Mr. B. L."Salmon raised the question as to whether tho Athletic Association should contribute towards the cost of the Basin Reserve's upkeep. The secretary (Mr. R. 0. Johnston) said he thought the first move should come from the association. If the association did not move in the matter, the Cricket Association would take a, hand. Mr. Johnston, said the Cricket Association was ■under considerable expense, and the Athletic Association had the use of the ground for a considerable period and paid nothing. The Wellington Caledonian Society ■applied' for the use of the Basin Reserve on Boxing Day. The application was granted, subject to the approval of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Association.

The Ground Committee suggested that the practice wickets on the Basin Reserve be charged at the rate of £3 per wicket. This was agreed to. A protest was received against the action of the committee in relega-ting the Victoria University College team to second grade—a decision which, it was contended, was largely due to the fact that so many of the members of the club had been killed in action or disabled by wounds. One result, it was stated, was that many members of the 'College Cricket Club were going in for other games. It was decided to reply that the entries for senior clubs have already been accepted. ' The secretary read a letter stating that the City Council had agreed to allow the association to have the use of the Basin Reserve at a rental of £200 per annum, provision to be made whereby the association would pay 50 per cent, of its surplus income over expenditure; the agreement to be for three years as from September,' 1920 ; and the total payment not to exceed £300 a year. The meeting decided to refer the matter back to the City Council 1 for review on certain points. Iri regard to the proposed, visit of a British team, it was announced that Wellington is to have three matches, one of which will be a test match.

The secretary suggested that on Labour Day a match be played on the Basm Reserve between jteams representing this year's juniors and this year's colts in the senior grades. The proposal was agreed to, and it was aleo decided that the junior team shall be picked from this yew's players. Mr. D. M'Kenzie was appointed sole selector for the season.
