PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL,

The fortnightly meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) presiding. Owners of < certain property in Jackson and Sydney streets were given 28 days in which to effect repairs. An owner of property in Victoria-street was given seven days in which to commence repairs. The Dunedin City Council forwarded a report suggesting that the Government be urged to provide all loans required by local bodies, subject to proper safeguards, thus ensuring .both uniform and lowest market rates of interest to be paid by all local bodies. The proposal was endorsed. Discussing a letter from the Coal Trade Committee, Councillor Tovey said it was a peculiar situation that the gasworks, being 1 an essential industry, should have had to borrow from another essential industry to keep ' going. He considered the distribution of coal was unfair. The Mayor announced that the local coal situation had somewhat improved. - Seven drivers employed by the council made application for an increase in' wages from £3 19s 2d per week to £5. The matter was referred to the Works Committee for report. An application for increase in salary from the assistant clerk was also referred to the same committee. The Wellington Education Board asKed for an expression of opinion that no | objection would be taken by the coun- , cil to an alteration of the proposed site t for a school on the Wilford Government settlement and affecting proposed intervening streets. The Mayor explained that the streets would not be d«ad-ends; it would only mean going round the school area. The alteration was approved. The Borough Engineer reported that the maximum and minimum water pressure during the past month had been 63 and 601b respectively, and the average weekly consumption 2,540,000 gallons. Up to date the value of the buildings erected during the year was £14,690, and the building fees paid £45.
