OPENING OF THE BOWLING

SEASON

Tho real opening of the bowling season v.\-.s celebrated on Saturday. Tho weather did not by any means "play tho game," but tho ceremonies took place, end some games were played. WELLINGTON CLUB. There was a big concourse- of members and visitors at the senior club's green 1, and in his opening remarks the President (Mr. JI. Carr) expressed pleasure at seeing among them Sir Robert Stout, who was one of the foundation members of the club. There was a ■ great year in front of bowlers, and he believed that every Wellington bowler would do hisbest to make the season a record one. The Dominion Association's tournament would be held here in January, and there was no , doubt that Wellington would not be backward in showing that abundant hospitality for which the citywas noted on such occasions. He had been advised that at least six Australian rinks would take part in tho tournament. It was a source of gratification that one of the Wellington Club members, Mr. T. Bush, had.bsen appointed president of tho Dominion Bowling ■Association. Sir Robert Stout also made a few remarks. Bowling he believed to be one of the mosl pleasurable gapies played in the Dominion. The fellowship sound on the green was a great factor in our social life, and if bowling could teach peace and harmony the game was worth preserving.- (Applause.) . .

Mrs: Carr then threw the first jack, and several games wore played. Afternoon tea was provided, and the opening was voted to be very enjoyable. The greens are in excellent condition, reflecting great credit on the caretaker (Mr. Earle). , THORNDON.

The Tliorndon Club's season was opened by the President (Mr. T. S. Ronaldson), in the presence of a numerous gathering. He made mention of the good condition of the green, and congratulated the caretaker (Mr. Peters) on ths excellent work he had done in spite of adverse weather conditions. Several games were . played, and guests and members spent a very pleasant afternoon. NEWTOWN. In the course of his remarks at the opening of the Newtown Club's green she President (Mr. H.'Sansonj made feeling reference to the loss by death, of Messrs. W. Armstrong and J. Martin. This, he said, was the twenty-seventh annual opening, and there were present three of the foundation members, Messrs. Astill, Danks, and Richards. He also thanked Mrs. S. H. Underwood for the very fine embroidering of the huia, the ■club's emblem, on the new flag, and Mrs. Underwood then, amid applause, threw the first "jack I'— a silver one, lent by Mr. James Brackenridge, one of Newtown's vetera.n skips. In the evening^ smoke concert was held in the club's rooms, Mr. Ranson presiding. A very enjoyable evening was spent.

• KELBTJRN. After the official opening ceremony at Kelburn, a match was played. between rinks representing the president and vice-president. The scores were : President 106, vice-president 85. 1 There was a record attendance at the opening of the Hutt Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club. Mr. W. Russell declared the" green open, and, in his remarks, said that Mr. M. J. Hodgins, i honorary superintendent oi the greens, had supervised the carrying out of a number of improvements. Mrs. Russell thnew the first jack, and several er.joyable games were played on the greens, and also on the croquet lawns. HATAITAI. Mr. \\T J. Young (president) opened the Hataitai Club's green, and the gam© between rinks representing president and director resulted in a will for the former by 133 to 99. The large number of members and visitors were, cared for by the lady friends of the club. LYALL BAY. There was a numerous gathering at Lyall Bay green. The President (Mr. J. R.yder) declared tb? season opened, and Mrs. Ryder threw the first jack andi rolled the first bowl. The function was most enjoyable. -
