THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS <JSI "SIR LAHc£u>T."l The nominations received by the Wellington Racing Club for tha Spring ■Meeting are very satisfactory.. The aggregate exceeds last year's total by about a hundred. One pieasing feature is the large field engaged in the Champion Plate. Arrowanuth and Amythas are in, also Duo and Vespucci, so that evidently R. J. Mason is resuming after tha A.J.C. Meeting. The Epsom ■Handicap winner, Greenstead, is a six-year-old, horse by Tha Welkin—Tuning Fork, and is owned by Messrs. E. L. Body and H. S. Simpson. , He is a stable mate of the A.J.C. Derby winner, both horses being trained by.F. Williams. Greenstead (9.6) was in receipt of 71b from Woiaroi, and was on the same mark as the grey Chrysoisxi-, who has been favourite for the race since the appearance of the weights. They met in the Spring Stakes, a mile weight-for-age race, ai Rcsehill last month, when Greenstead defeated Chrysolp.us 71b) by two lengths in Imin 41f-sec. Woiaroi was among the also-' started division. Twelve months ago ' Greenstead ran third in the same race to Woiaroi and Quaestor. The time put up on Saturday, Imin 37sec, is best on record for the race, and .equals the Aus- ■ tralasian record. * ■ ■..... Birkie was engaged in the Trial Stakes 1 at Masterton, but having won at Otaki is not now eligible to compete. ■ The Wanganui winners Hyginas and Ben Bolt scored again at Napier Park. W. Donovan is bringing half-a-dozen horses to Trentham, including D'u,o, the Wanganui Guineas winner, who is engaged in the Champion Plate. • It takes a lot of handicap horses as a general rule to provide a good raoe, but only two. high-class perform era are required to witness a stirring contest. Poitrel arid Kennaquhair,. the two Australasian champion performers, made a dead heat in the Spring Stakes at Rand■vick on_ Saturday A few seasons back Reputation, a New Zealand representative, dead-heated in the same race with St. Carwyne. A. year later Sasanof and Bee ran first and second'in the same race. It was a great pity Gloaming was unable to represent the Dominion in Saturday's race. He may not have won, but he_ would have made the other pair do their best for a, mile and a quarter, and perhaps longer. Poitrel won tha race the two previous years, beating Kennaquhair on both occasions. Twelve months ago Poitrel only beat Gloaming a head. Saturday's win. places Poitrel a.n<l Kennaquhair above Gloaming in.the list of ,Austcalasian winners. ■ Hawkes Bay trained horses were successful in the two-year-old race each day of the Avondale Meeting. Maunu, winner of the Nursery Handicap on Saturday, was not among the runners in the ' Stakes on the opening day.. The success of Maunu, trained by A. MAuley for Mr. H. E. Troutbeck, was anticipated 1 by stay-at-home backers, and the dividend came as a pleasant ■ surprise. Maunu, whose first appearance it was in public, is a brown colt by'Wolawa—. Float, and wa3 bred by Mr. E. 3. Watt. He is a. half-brother to Football, All Abjaid, Pontoon, and others that have carried Mr. Watt's colours' successfully in Australia. Maunu is engaged in the Hastings Stakes, to be run on Wednes- ■ clay next, but is not in the WelleGie} Stakes. Miss Gold, who raced consistently on : both days at Wanganui, scored in the Railway Handicap at Napier Park on Saturday. ; Miss Gold and Dainty Step premise to bo useful stake earners for Lucullus this season. In. her only four starts this ■ season. Satisfaction (Bezonian—Satisfaire) has run three firsts and a second.
