BRITISH OFFERS SCORNED.
(HKiIES KZSS ASSOCIATION.—OOFXRIOST.) (RBBTBR'J TBlBOItAK.) LONDON, 25th August. Replying to an appeal from a sister of the Lord Mayor of Cork asking for his release and stating that if he'wereallowed to die the relatives and people of Ireland would hold the Government responsible for murder, Mr. Lloyd George telegraphed expressing his profound regret at the pain inflicted on the sister by the brother's'determination to st&rve himself, but saying it was impossible for tho Government to make any exception in his case. If it did so it would break tiowo ihe administration of law, as all prisoners would ','laini the same-privilege. '.Che Premier H-leo issued a statement emphrieising the foregoing viows and pointing 6ut that the recent release of hun-ger-strikers in Ireland was followed by an outburst of cruel murder and outrage without any protest from the political organisation to which the Lord Mayor belonged. The Premier deciares that the very crime of which M'Swiney was convicted indicated that he wa« concerned in a conspiracy against the constabulary, whom it was the first duty of the Government to protect, and concludes:—"Every invitation to Irish Nationalists to discuss a, peaceable settlement has been ' spurned, and the Government's latest offer made in Parliament at the date of. the adjournment was scornfully rejected. We are driven to fight against a claim for the complete secession of Ireland north and south from the Empire. This claim we can never . recognise."/ i (Received August 27, 9 a.m.) LONDON,, 25th August. Alderman M'Swiney has received the Last Sacrament: (Received August 27, 9 a.m.) LONDON, 26th August.
