The Hon. Mark Cohen, M.L.C., is at present an inmate of a private hospital m Chrktchurch, having been compelled to lay up ou his way south as the result of an attack of influenza, in Wellilgton. Ma. J. O'Donovan, Commissioner of Police, is confined to his house with an attack of influenza. Mr. K. N. H. Browne, local' deputyPublic Trustee at Auckland, has resigned, in order to engage in legal practice. The death is announced of Captain M'Donald, of Lyttelton. formerly Harbourmaster at the- Bluff. One of his sons is an engineer of the Union Co.'s Rosamond, at present lying in Wellington. . • . Mr. W. Slaughter, officer in charge of the Ohristcliurch Labour Bureau, lias been promoted, deputy-chief inspector of factories, deputy-registrar of industrial unions, and deputy-superintendent of workers' dwellings. Mr. H. J. Thompson, of Thompson. Brothers, Ltd., Wellington, who haa b<;en abroad for tlis past twelve months, proposes to leave England about the end of the present month, via America, connecting with the Makttra at Vancouver, a>rid reaching the Dominion early in November. , Mr. H. Damant, who has been secretary of the Hutt Valley Co-operative Building Society since its inception, resigned last evening from the office, and was accorded by the members a hearty vote of thanks and a bonus for his services. Member^ spoke in high terms of -the work accomplished by Mr. Damant, who is retiring owing to advancing years. -Mr. M. A. Carr, president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, returned from a visit to Australia by the Manuka from Sydney last evening. Mr._ Leo D. Chateau returned from a business trip. The funeral of the late Mrs. Ballachev, wife of the Bey. W. Ballachey, took place in St. Mary's : Churchyard, Karon, yesterday morning. The service in the church was conducted by the Revs. - G. Y. Woodward and W. Fancourt, and that at the graveside by the Bishop of Wellington. Several others of the clergy attended, a.nd there were ajso amongst those present a number of very old friends of the deceased who remembered her when the Bey. W. Ballachey waa Vicar of Karori some iorty-flve years ago. Mr. Charles E. Cuming, formerly of the New Zealand Times staff, afterwards editor of the Journal of the Department of Agriculture, and for several years pa6t editor of the Now Zealand Farmer, is taking a profit-sharing editorial position on the new paper, The Dairy Farmer, to be published by the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company. His associate will be Mr. It. P. Connel, of tlie Department of Agriculture. He will be succeeded on the New Zealand Farmer by Dr. Freeman, a former instructor in the Department, who will have associated with him Mr. E. Clifton, who was New Zealand Commissioner at the Panama Exposition.
