MEAT TRUST PROFITS
FOUR TIMES MORE THAN BEFORE.
A fifth report has just been issued by the United States Federal Trade Commission concerning the operations of the American Meat Trust. This fifth section of the Government Commission's indictment of the Trust, states the London correspondent of The Post, deals with the war profits of the American meat firms. The remarkable fact is revealed that not only were the Trust's profits no diminution on pre-war gains, but were actually four times those of the pre-w,ar standard. This revelation has come with startling force to those who remember that eaxly in the war the American meat firms announced that in the spirit of patriotism they were going to pool their resources in the cause of the Allies and supply meat during the war at a very small rate of prdit to themselves. .They have now been betrayed in the act' of seizing four times the previous amount of profit taken from the world consumer. Furthermore, part 5 of the Commission's report decisively states that the accounts of the American Meat Trust have been inaccurately published,' and this, and the other evidence, must weigh. ■ heavily in the publio feeling which is still arrayed against the American meat monopoly, although it may not now be actually before a legal tribunal.
