INCREASED RATES

FOR USE OF TELEPHONES ADDITIONAL £1 FOE SUBSCRIBEES. The Postmaster-General (Hon. J. 6. Coates) announces, in connection with the increase in Post and Telegraph charges, from the Ist of next month, that each telephone exchange subscriber in the Dominion will bo required! to pay an additional £1 per annum per connection ; and that there will be imposed an increase of 5s per quarter-mile for lines extending beyond the present maximum distance (half-a-mile from the exchange in the- case of private residence connections) for which the initial rats is charged.- The increase does not apply to current subscriptions due before the Ist August. From- the same date the fee for telephone bureau communications will be raised as under : —Distance : Up to 10 miles, new rates for first three minutes, 6d; 10 to 20 miles, 6d'; 20 to 50 miles, 9d; 50 'to 75 miles, Is; 75 to 100 miles, Is 6d; 100 to ISO miles, 2s 3d<; 150 to 200 miles, 3s; 200 to 250 miles, 3s 9d'j 250 to 300 miles, 4s 6d; 300 to 350 miles, 5s 3d; 350 to 400 miles, 6s; 400 to 450 miles, 6s 9d; 450 to 500 miles, 7s 6d. The rate for each minute after the first three minutes will also be raised. For communications from subscribers speaking from their own telephone hall these rates will be charged for a distance up to ten miles. Night bureau communications at half rates will be available from 10 instead of 8 p.m.
