CHESS

THE WELLINGTON CLUB

The Wellington Club's championship tourney was advanced a. further stage last week, as follows:—A. W. Gyles won from G. P. Anderson, and also from M'Jfair, Lee won from Fouhy, Faulknor won from Kelling, and W. E. Mason won from G. P. Anderson. A draw was agreed to at a late hour in the game Barnes v. Lee, and also in the fixture S. Gyles v. Purchas. Mr. A. W. Gyles is now leading, having played four games and won them all. Messrs. W. E. Mason, Barnes, S. Gyles, and W. Mackay are each half a point short of the possible. Good progress was also made' in the club's Pethsrick tourney (handicap), wins being scored by Messrs. Barnes, Faulknor, Jessup, Dornbusch, Wring, and Rev. Mr. Braddock. A very long game between Mrs. Gyles and E. S. Taylor ended in a draw by perpetual check. The be3t scores to date in this contest are as follow:—Rev. Mr. Braddock 5 wins 2 losses, H. Jessup 4J.-4, Barnes 4^-l£, W. C. White 4-3, Wring 4-3, Gyles, sen., 4-3, E. S. Taylor'3^l4, and Faulknor' 3-2.

The ladder match for rang 5 between H. L. James (defender) and A. W. Gyles (challenger) ended in favour of the latter by two games to one. Gyles has now challenged W. E. Mason for rang 2. The play in this match will be watched with more than ordinary interest. It will be remembered that these two members tied for the New Zealand Championship at the Napier Congress (1911----12), when Mason won the play-off. The Masterton Chess Club proposes to send a, team of fifteen players by motorcars to play the Wellington Club at an early date. In the event of this match taking 'place on, 7th August the interclub fixture, Ngaio v. Wellington South, will probably have to be postponed owing to overlapping membership. "REP." MATCHES. The telegraphic match- Otago v. Canterbury ended in a handsome win for the former club by 11^ games to 4£. The Auckland v. Canterbury match is scheduled for 24th and 31st July, and the Auckland v. Otago match for 7th and 14th August. The Wanganui v. Kelson mafeh was abandoned owing to trouble with the Wanganui instrument on the second evening ; Nelson held a pronounced advantage on the first evening's play.
