NEW TRAM FARES

LONG-DISTANCE PASSENGERS.

The subject of the increased tra-m fares received further consideration at the meeting of the City Council last night. The Tramways Committee recommened: "That the Greater Wellington. Townplanning Association he informed, in reply to their request that preferenco should be given to long-distance passengers in /Connection with, the revision of tram fares, that special consideration was given to this matter when the new scale was adopted." Councillor J. O. Shorland urged that the time of availability for the use of workers' tickets should be extended half an hour, and he moved that the recommendation be referred back to the committee with a view to considering this question. Councillor J. Glover seconded. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke, C.M.G., M.P.) said he thought the time for the use of workers' tickets should be extended to 9 o'clock, as many of those t who went to work at that time were very often much mors poorly-paid than those who commenced work at 8 o'clock. It was unfair, in his opinion, that there j should be such a class distinction. The I council, however, did not yet know exactly how the increased fares were going to pan put. They would probably have the necessary information at their disposal in a month's time, and he thought [ they should defer consideration of the [ issues raised until then. He ruled the I amendment out of order, and the recommendation was adopted. The Tramways Committee also recommended': "That the request of the Miramar Borough Council that the new carmileage should not come into force until the_ 14th,' instant be not. acceded to." This was adopted.
