"WANTED TO RENT"
IN SEARCH OF HOMES,
Replies to recent advertisements in The Post give further evidence of. the keen demand for housing accommodation in Wellington. "To let, comfortably furnished 5-rd. House; every convenience, lovely view; h. and c. water, gas stove, coal range, 10 minutes from car; 30s per week; references required," was one announcement on Tuesday which caught the eye of many house-hunters, and shortly after the circulation of the early edition of the paper numerous replies were being handed over the> counter. There is no doubt that by this time'the successful applicant is preparing to. enter the new home; yet answers to the advertisement were stifl icing received yesterday. The morning's batch of letters totalled fifty-five.- Booms and fiats are likewise' being eagerly sought. For a furnished flat, also advertised "to let" on Tuesday, many prospective tenants were still applying, the number of requests handed in as late as yesterday morning being twenty-seven. Occasionally, when an unfurnished house is vacant, the applications for tenancy are even more numerous; the receipt of from 80 to 100 letters in reply to a single advertisement being quite a, Usual occurrence at the front office of The Post. The lengths to which some people hays been compelled to go in their desire to secure a house, are shown in the "Wanted to Bent" column daily. One notable example this week was the following:— "Wanted to rent, 3 to 6-rd. House or Flat, £15 bonus; will pay three months' rent in advance." In another case, an. offer oi £4 per week was made for a furnished house or flat, while offers of bonuses of £5 and £10 are common.
