OHIRO HOME

SATISFACTORY ADMINISTRATION;

The report of the Special Committee set :up to inquire into the general administration and suitability of the Ohiro ■Home (a summary of< which appealed in last nights I-'ost; was discussed at the meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday afternoon.

Mt. P. Castle, .chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, said the inquiry aroJte as the result of a deputation from the^ Labour Representation. Committee,, which condemned the sit* and building generally, and 'complained that the food supplied war not good enough and was insufficient. The report, generally speaking, supported the board, which had really done its Irest for the corafort and welfare of the old peoplo who ' were committed ■to its care. ■He did not thiqk that the board should provide a better home and living than was enjoyed by the average old age pensioner. It was not the boKrd'n policy to encourage old people-to go into the home. As i regards the old man Ford, concerning whom complaints had been made, the investigation proved conclusively that the board had .acted justly by ihim. Mr. J. Hutchison approved ths report, but suggested that the dinner;the main meal of tho day, should be made more attractive by the addition of pudding. He thought that as regards I'ord the board's action was above reproach.

Mr. J. Glover, as a member of the' Special Committee, said he had no fault to find with the administration. He thought also. that everything possible had ließi dojie for Ford. He supported Mr, Hutchison in urging the provision of pudding at the main meal of the day, and with that aim in view he moved that the clause relating to dietary be referred back to the committee for further report. Mr. J. W. M'Ewan pointed out that the committee expressed the opinion that the addition of a rather more liberal supply of such articles ?,s stewing fruits, jam, and cake, while not otrictly necessary, might make the dietary more attractive. Thi3 wao meant tc apply throughout the week. Mr. F. T. Moore suggesbsd that if tha board made the menu the same as that of the Midland Hotel the latter would soon loos all-'iio clients.

After further discussion Mr. Glover withdrew his amendment, and tho report w&3 adopted unanimously.
