CITY POWER SCHEME
THE HARRIS-STREET PROPOSALS After considerable time spent in. a committee sitting last night, the City Council resumed at 11 p.m. in open meeting. When the press representatives entered the -council chamber, Councillor J. Hutchison was moving a motion, of which he had given notice, "That the .resolution carried on 30th March, authorising the instillation of new elec-. trical plant in Harris-street, be rescinded, and a new site chosen." The resolution referred to pledged the council to proceed with extensions of plant at the Harris-street power-houee, rather than embark on a new steam plant. A report by the City Engineer on this matter was then circulated. Councillor Frost said lie was in sympathy with the motion except the last iflause, "and a new site chosen." which he. thought rather bound the council to • a specific course of ac;ion before, it had all the data, before it. . \ The "'Mayor said that the report of the City Engineer "cm' this matter had not been available until that night. ' But thu council could not deal with that report until the i'ormer resolution had been rescinded. He. however, asked Councillor Hutchison to leave out the words "and a ne'.v sits chosen," and if that were done and the rcscintlini} motion carried they could start de r.ovo. Councillor Hutchison agreed to do as requested. The motion was then carried, and the council went again into committee, the request beir.g made to the press thst the Engineer's report meanwhile should not be published.
