A SUNDAY DANCE

GORING-STREET PROTEST. / A (letter, signed by Mr. E. Tregear and eighteen other residents of Goringstreet, in the vicinity of the Thorndon Hall, come before the City, Council last evening, protesting against the use of the hall on the night of Sunday, 9th. M!ay, for a dance, which, it was stated, lasted till 4 a.m. the next day. The letter also referred to the hall being used for a night-club. The Mayor (Mr. J: P. Luke) said that he had explained to Mr. Tregear that neither he nor the council's officials hadl issued any permit. He thought Mr. Ti'eg'ear ought to be as generous in withdrawing his statements about the alleged granting of the permit as lie was enthusiastic in condemning it. The hall was a private^ affair, and the granting of any permit was nothing to do with, the council or himself. As in the case' of a dance in a private house, it was for the neighbours to take action if a, nuisance was-'created.
