A somewhat ununual series of coincidences was described by Chief-Detective M'Mahon in the Auckland Police Court on Saturday in connection with the tn*eft of a cheque for £12 16s- by William Charles Reid. A telegram from a country hotelkeeper, offering £12 16s for a. mare, was sent to Mr. Alfred Reid, care of Mr. F. M. Winstone. The communication was delievered to another man jiamed Winstone, with whom tho accused formerly resided. It was forwarded to the accused, Reid, who, according to his •tory, thought he had been left the animal as a legacy. He promptly accepted the offer, and the cheque was sent direct to him. The Magistrate, Mi-. J. K. Wilson, S.M., said Reid could easily ) h\>- a--.ertained whether the money was actually intended for him. As Reid had hitherto borne a g^ood character he would merely convict him and order him to come up for sentence if called upon, subject to the money being refunded.
