E. ilackay, who was charged with attempted murder, has resigned from the position of Mayor of Wanganui Borough, which he had held for twelve years. The council will probably elect me of its members to carry on for the balance of the term. Cresswell, the wounded man, is showing steady improvement, but 'it will be some time yet before the bullet can be 2-emoVed. It is reported that rather sen; sational developments may bo expected at the trial. ' .
