FIGURES FOR THE YEAR

i Statements of the year's working of tho municipal electric supply in tramways and lighting were laid before the Oity Council last evening by the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke, M.P.), who announced thai they had just come to hand. In view of the disabilities of tho service, the tramway report -\ffas satisfactory, showing a net credit balance of £18,012 for the year ended 31st March, 1920.

The total revenue for 1919-20 was £277,087, as compared . .with £222,892 last year—an increase of £54,195. The expenditure amounted to £255,262, as compared with £212,746 last year—am increase of £42,516. The balance carried forward to tho appropriation account was £21,825, as compared with £10,146 last year. The balance to credit for' power supply and track lighting was £1573 (as compared' to £2233 last year), which is alao carried, on to the appropriation account, making its total £23,393. Of this amount £251 goes to pay war allowances, £1668 for superannuation, £2000 for special appropriations for horse tramway loan sinking fund, £82 for the band subsidy and fees, and '£1385 for'the annual amount of 4 per cent, written off preliminary expenses, leaving a net credit balance of £18,012 for the year.

The statistics for the year were as follow :—Total revenue, per car mile, ,21.36 d; working expenses, 16.14 d; special expenditure per car mile, 0.41 d; capital charges, 3.53 d; total expenses, 20.09 d; net.surplus per car mile, 1.27 d; percentage of wol'king expenses to revenue, 75 per cent.; passengers carried on city lines, 37,335,154; passengers carried per car mile on city lines, 12.76; car miles run on city and borough lines, 3,113,181. *

A slightly greater net credit balance ■of £18,367 was shown by the ■ electiic lighting department in its report. > The total revenue of the electric lighting department for the .year ended 31et March last was £103,393, as compared with £94,418 last year, being an increase of £9575. The expenditure for .the year totalled £80,068, as against £64,556 for the preceding year, an increase of £15,512, so that the increase in ■working expenses exceeded the increase in revenue by £5947. The balance carried forward to the appropriation ac-' count was £23,925, from»whioh the foll»wiug items have been deducted :—Waxpay allowance, £50; contribution to superannuation fund, £393; annual amount of 4 per cent, written off preliminary oxpenses, £115; amount written offi old station plant, £5000, leaving a net credit balance for the year of .J18.367.

The units sold during the year were: Private lighting. 3.419,488; public, lighting, 433,650; power supply, 596,460; heating supply, 1,529,018; total units sold, 5,968,616. There were 11,351 lighting, 404 power, and 6237 heating connections made during the year.
