NEW ZEALAND REPRESENTATION
CASE FOR GOVERNMENT SUPPORT
CUT TELCar.Ar-H.—SPECIAL TO THE POST.)
WANGANUI, 15th April.
At a meeting of sports bodies held this evening in connection with the Dominion's representation at the Olympic games, to be held at Antwerp, Mr. L. Cohen said' he considered that this athletic enterprise should be regarded as a national one, and that the Government should support it financially by a grant or subsidy. He moved that strong representations should be made to the Olympic Council on the matter, with the request that it should ask the Government to support the proposal; that the publicity of New Zealand caused by the success of competitors at the. Olympic Games would far exceed anything that has yet been achieved by the Government, except by the New Zalanders at the war; that financial support coming from the Government would be a great inducement to the public and sports orSanisationsun New Zealand to raise funds supplementing a Government gran;, that would enable. tli« sending of a truly represontative selection of capable competitors for Olympia in almost every branch of sport. The motion, was carried, and it was decided that copies should be sent to the Olympic Council and to the Sports' Councils at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Uunedin, asking for support. The meeting made final arrangements to raise monej locally by means of t an Olympia Day next Wednesday, as well, as the athletic sports gatherings on Saturday.
