SWIMMING
A SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL
MISS WALROND A RECOKD BREAKER.
"It's 0110 of the biggest- crowds I've ever seen at a swimming carnival in Wellington," said one enthusiast present at the gathering at Te Aro Baths on Saturday afternoon. He was right. Tho Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Swimming Association, tho body respousible for the carnival, has every reason to_ congratulate itself on the success attained. The weather, ever the main consideration, was favourable, and some time before the sport commence*! avcry available seat was occupied. It was uni fortunate that about 4 o'clock showers of rain began to fall, but, although some of the spectators began to move homewards, the races were not affected. Several New Zealand champions made their appearance at the carnival, irichid-' ing Miss V. Walrond (Auckland),. Miss K. Bristed (Christ-chm-eh),. Miss G. Shand (Christchurch), E. G. L. Patterson (Wellington), and C. Claridge (Wellington). Considerable interest centred in the i Ladies' Invitation Scratch Race (100 yards), in which" Misses Walrond, Shand, and Bristed competed., "The Auckland girl, who has one 'if the prettiest styles yet seen in Wellington, had i little difficult in winning the race, and I in doing so she broke the New Zealand and Australian records.; Her tinje was 71 seconds-dead. _ At the New Zealand Championships, Miss Walrond covered the distance in 71 2-ssec. Miss Shand, w4io was second, also proved to be n very fast swimmer. Only two started in the 100 yards Provincial Championship—Patterson and Murrel. Murrell.. getting the better I start, !e:ul over the first twenty-live | yards, but after the first turn Patterson steadily pulled ahead, and v/on hy about a yard. His time wus 60 l-sseo ; one-fifth i of a second more than his own New Zealand record; The life-saving contest, the Swimmers' Memorial, proved most interesting. Two methods of saving were employed, the Island Bay Surf Club being first, and the Ladies' Doyal Life-Saving Society second. The Lyall Bay Surf Club also competed; Tlie- Flying Squadron Relay Race, in which eacii swimmev is required to cover 100 yards, was won by the Lyn.ll Bay five, with Wellington second, ' and Tborndon third. Lya'l] Bay and Thorndon kept practically together over the first 200 yards, but the latter team gradually lost ground, and the Wellington team, whose last swimmer \ was Patterson, passed them easily. The Ladies' Royal Life-Saving'-Society's team also competed. The Duthie Cup (Schools' Relay Race) was won by Mount Cook, last year's •vinners,' Clyde Quay, being last. DETAILED RESULTS.
