SHOCKING FATALITY

MAN' KILLED AT PETONE STATION,

As the train from Upper Hutt was entering the Petone railway station at 8.41 o'clock this morning, a man was seen by the driver to rush from the east side of the station on to the line immediately in front of the engine. Before anything could be done to prevent an accident the engine passed over the man, causing such shocking injuries' that death was instantaneous. The police took oharge of the remains, and from papers on.the body it was ascertained that the man's name was Henry Henderson. According to the return half of a railway ticket found on the "body the deceased had arrived'in Petone this morning from Wellington, but whether it was his in- ] lention to return to the city by the train from Upper Hutt is not known. No explanation can be given as to how deceased came ...to jump on to the line as apparently he was not noticed until seen by the driver directly in front of the engine. Deceased had followed the occupation of a timber worker, and had resided in Mangapuhi, near Te Kuiti, but an address on a membership card was also given as 66, Cook-street, Auckland. He was a. single man, twenty-eight years of age. having been born at Paisley, Scotland, where, it is believed, his mother and a sister now reside. A letter on the deceased appeare3 to imply that he had a brother in New Zealand. In August, 1914, he enlisted at Hamilton for war service, and proceeded to the front with the Auckland Regiment. Main Body. He was wounded on Gallipoli, and returning to New Zealand, was discharged in October, 1915. An inquest will be held.
