DEPARTMENTAL CRICKET
TELEGRAPH OFFICERS' ANNUAL
MATCH
The annual cricket match between teams, representing the telegraph officers of the Chrietchurch and Wellington Post Offices opened on the Basin Reserve this morning. The game was arranged originally to commence yesterday, but the heavy downpour of rain rendered play quite impossible and postponement inevitable. The wicket this morning was in excellent order in epite of the rain of yesterday, and the bright, breezy weather made conditions pleasant. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat. Martin »ml Watt opened the innings for Christchurch and made an excellent start. Watt batted finely and quickly reached the score of 44, when he was caught by Phillips off Christopberson, who, with Toms, had taken the place of Robinson and Phillips, the first pair of bowlers. Haynes followed, but did not last long. A 6mart bit of work behind the wicket by Patterson got him out for five, Christopherson being again ■ the bowler. The lunch adjournment found the score 73 for two wickets, both taken by Christopherson for 26 runs. Martin was not out 23.
