Mr. H. Oakley Browne, the defeated candidate for Wellington North, was received with intermingled cheers and boohooing, and cries of "Where is Joey?" He said he haa been defeated (uproar), but he had only made a~ preliminary.can;. ter so far. It was a deferred payment system ; he had paid his deposit, and he would lift it next time. He did not lift it on this occasion because the progressive vote was split, and there was no' doubt in his mind that' they could beat the Conservative Party in Wellington North if they had a straight go. He beat.the Labour man. As a.matter of fact the Conservative candidate was elected on a minority of 1100 votes, and until they got something better than the second ballot and had a proper system of representation in this country—(uproar). He concluded by thanking his helpers and saying that next time he hoped to be the winning candidate.
