A SHIPPING DISPUTE
Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., delivered reserved judgment at the Magistrate's Court this morning in regard to a claim for £50 8s 6d brought by George Doughty and Co., warehousemen, against tho Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, Ltd., ship owners, in respect of pillaged and damaged gpods. The claim was inado up pf 19s 5d loss due to the pillaging of a pair of boots and a sum of £49 9s Id for the loss on tho salo of other boots damaged on the voyage frorii London to Wellingtop through being dampened by spirits (whisky or brandy), whioh had leaked from other cases. The defendant company admitted liability, for the missing pair of boots, but denied liability for the remainder of the damage, on the ground that it came within tho exception "injurious effects pf other goods." After going into the law on the questions raised by counsel, the Magistrate upheld the defendant company's case, and said that upon the evidence presented the company could not be hold liable for any damage beyond that admitted. Judgment would bee for the defendant company with costs amounting tp. £2 9s. Mr. D. Smith appeared for the plaintiffs, and Mr! M Myers for the defendant company.
