£1000 DAMAGES
JURY AND CO-RESPONDENT
SEDUCTION OF SOLDIER'S WIFE,
In a divorce case heard at the recent sitting of the Supreme Court at Wanganui, before his Honour Sir W B. Edwards and a common jury of twelve, the jury gave an unmistakable proof of their strong disapprobation of the conduct of those men who have taken advantage of the absence of husbands upon military service to seduce their wives. The suit for divorce was by a young storeman at Utiku. The sum of £1000 was claimed as damages from the co-respon-dent, a farmer at Utiku, who had seduced the young wife of the petitioner during his' absence on military service in France. The wife admitted her error, and did not defend tho case. The corespondent did defend the case, but the jury marked their appreciation of his conduct by returning a verdict against him for the full amount claimed. It is to the credit of the petitioner that after the verdict had been returned he, by his counsel (Mr. Treadwell), disclaimed any desire to profit by his wife's slip, and applied to the court to settle the damages upon her and the child of their marriage.
