Mr. L. G. M'Donald, of the Ashburton Post Office staff, who is being transferred to Masterton, was met by a number of Ashburton business men at the Borough Council Chambers, and presented with a purse of sovereign*.

Mr. •R. A. Kenner, a former member of the' literary stall of the Auckland Star, who recently returned from France, where he had been doing work as a field secretary for the Y.M.C.A., has taken up the position of general secretary of the Christchurch branch of the Y.M.G.A.

Mr. George Tiller, who has a record of 53 years' continuous service in Sunday schoolwork 51 years of which have been in the Taranaki-street Methodist School, was recommended by the Sunday School Union last night -for the longservice diploma.

Mr. Frederick Redwood, second son of the late Mr. Henry Redwood, "father of the New Zealand turf," and a nephew of. Archbishop Redwood, died at his . home' in Spring Creek yesterday (states a Press Association message from Blenheim). Deceased was a prominent settler-in Marlborough' for many yeara.

x Mr. Alex. Harvey, sen., founder of the firm of Harvey and Sons, engineers, Auckland, is dead; aged 78. He was born in Ayrshire, and was in business in Manchester before he left for New Zealand in the 70's as a, young man, under: Mr. Vesey Stewart's settlement scheme. ' ■

Mr. John Heaton Rhodes, a son of the late Mr. G. H. Bbodes,- is due back in Christchurch from England next week. When the war broke out Mr. Rhodes was on his way to England. Immediately on his arrival in the Old Country he enlisted, and obtained a commission in the Army Service Corps. He served throughout the war, being for,a greater part of the time with the forces at Salonika. , :
