AND A SEQUEL.
(BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
AUCKLAND, This Day.
A case which has aroused much interest here occupied the attention of Mr. Cutten, S.M., to-day. Angus Calder was charged that he ill-treated a boy four years old, and caused his unnecessary suffering by repeatedly dipping him in a bath of cold water and holding him under the water. Evidence given at the inquest on the boy was produced to the effect that the boy was admitted t° the hospital on 7th June, suffering severely from frostbitten feet. He was in a very weak 'condition, having slept out several nights without food. The boy's condition improved, but on 13th June tetanus appeared, and this resulted in his death. Dr. Tressider, of Onehunga, stated that the accused brought the boy to him for treatment, stating' that lie had run away from home and , had stopped away 'several days, haying no food. Tho boys-feet were in a terrible state; it might be-said they were dead. Accused told witness that the boy was addicted to a certain bad habit, for which he had ' beaten him plenty of times. ,7,lyh^,„bpy i . ..dW.not^ mind being beateri,^b'ut -he'^i^'"'nind-;tlie -cold -baths, and witness' gave him cold baths instead of beating him.
