UNION OP CHURCHES
THE DENOMINATIONAL
SYSTEM,
(BI TEIEORAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
TIMARU, sth August. The Timaru Presbytery to-day considered the question of the union of churches. The Rev. Mr. Tocker (Geraldine), in the absence of the Rev. Mr. Stinson, moved, and the Rev. Mr. Ussher (St. Andrew's) seconded, a motion in favour of union, provided a satisfactory basis of union was agreed upon. The Revs. Harries (Chalmers) and Begg (Highfield) moved as an amendment Tthatywhijp upion/;is; cjesirable .on, practical' grounds the' denominational system, which has not been without.its use 3, cannot be suddenly brought to an end without a grave risk of increasing the evils of, dissent' and divieion, the removal of which was chiefly aimed at. Also that the Presbytery would favour the federation of the churches, but the mind of the Church is too divided, and it feels that there is at present not behind the movement the spiritual impulse which would warrant a change so great and irrevocable.
After discussion, the amendment was carried by 7 to 5. Three ministers and two elders voted for the amendment, and four ministers and three elders against it.
