' THE TOFGA,

After several years of useful service as a troopship the Tofua h»s taken up her former occupation as a merchant vessel. She arrived at Wellington . this morning from Lyttelton, looking spic arid span after her recent overhaul at Port Chalmers. Her dull war garb has 6een replaced by "more becoming colours. The hull has been painted dark green, and her newly painted red and black funnel and renovated deck give her a smart appearance. Be' fore the war the Tofua was engaged In the Sydney-South Sea service. She was taken over by the Imperial authorities a few months after the ontbreak of hostilities, and was employed in carrying New Zealand troops until just recently. Captain H. IT. vTiniamß is in command,, and has the following officers associated with hint:—Chief, Mr. J. McLean; ' second, Mr. E. J. McClellan; third, Mr. H. R. i Young; chief engineer, Mr. H. Bart; second, Mr. E. Graham; third, Mr. H. P. Sucker; fourth, Mr. P. Middleditch; fifth, Mr. 11.I1. Newson; sixth, Mr. W. B. Fordyce. The Tofua is at present loading tor San Francisco and way ports, and is to leave Wellington on Friday.

The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company claims the distinction of being the pioneers in the trade, as it fitted out - the first sailing,ship with refrigerating ma chinery, and that vessel, the Dunedin, sailed from the colony in 1882. The company sue. cesstully inaugurated an industry which has since assumed such vast dimensions, and It now ' sliips over 2,000,000 carcases .to England annually. In 1882 tie amount of frozen meat ' shipped from New Zealand totalled 1,707,328 pounds, which amount in 1916 hid been Increased to 366,000,0001b. In a nutshell New Zealand now exports as much frozen meat In a day on an average as she did annually 37 '' years ago.

DRTOCTXG SCHEME.

The Otago Harbour Board has decided to commence another dredging scheme for the lower harbour. An estimate of the relative cost of a 35ft and a 30tt scheme was given, and the board decided on the 30ft scheme in the meantime. The cost of such dredging was estimated at £15,000 for a width of 300ft, but the board will have the channel 300ft wid» in'the straight and 6Ooffc wide in the bends.

, 'After an oxteoslye overhaul at Port Chalmers the Kittawa sailed from Dunedin at noon yesterday for Timaru to complete ■ loading for Wellington. Cable advice states that the Luckenbacb liner Western Comet is due at Auckland on the 17th July from Sydney to load for New York and Boston at Auckland and Wellington. Advice has been received by the C. and D. tine that the Port Victor left New York on the 20th June with cargo for Wellington, tytteltou/ Diinedln, and Australia. She should l-each Wellington about the 24th July. An expected arrival at Wellington to-mor-row is the cable repair steamer Iris. On the 21st June the Kaikoura, en route from Wellington to London, sailed from Colon for Newport News. She left Wellington on the 21st May. With cargo for Wellington the Rakanoa isl to sail from Bluff on Saturday next. From Sydney the Suffolk was to arrive at Port Chalmers this morning, and is to load in New Zealand for Liverpool. She is to go to Napier from the South, and will then complete loading at Wellington. About Saturday next the Hlnemoa it due at Wellington from Manukau, and will visit the Cook Strait lighthouses next week Last evening the Whaketsne arrived at Wei- I llngton from Picton, and is to sail on Saturday next for London, via Panama. Li'.Et month the 8.1. liner Nowshera was to leave New York for Australia under the A. and A. Line. Sho is one of the "G" type of .standard vessels, having been built by Messrs H.irland and Wolff. Her length is 650ft, beam 58ft, and depth 40ft, with a gross tonnage of 8000, displacement of 16,000 tons, is 10,800 tons deadweight, and can steam 13 knots.
