LABOUR CANDIDATES AT PETONE
,The Labour ■ Representation Committee's candidates at Petone addressed a meeting on municipal affairs in the Grand Theatre, Petone, last evening. Mr.- Strong occupied the chair.' Mr. Scholefield criticised the want of business methods in municipal concerns. The Petone L.R.C had been the first to advocate the increasing of old-age pensions to meet the added cost of living.
Mr. Spurr dealt with the administration of .municipal enterprises and the platform of the Labour Party.
Mr. A. Anderson took credit for moving the motion which made the Hutt Park a paying concern. The rise in the price of gas was not justified. The municipal balance-sheets failed to' give adequate information on borough affairs, r
Mr. Seddon criticised, the want of knowledge of financial affairs displayed by councillors. Every municipal activity should be self-supporting. Municipal enterprise, while competing, with private enterprise, would not be a success; the nationalisation of industry must come first. Town-planning was necessary for' the health of the community.
Mr. Ci-rehouse, a present councillor,' favoured the nationalisation of the Huttroad. The 'bus service would never be a financial success. There was need, of a comprehensive tram service to.link up the Wellington trams' with the -whole valley.
