Mr. W. T. Collins, Government Veterinarian for Waikato, has been transferred to Wellington.

Recent vagaries on the part of the Post Office clock are accounted for quite simply. Some workmen were fitting up illuminations preparatory to the peace celebrations, and either they or a gust of wind broke the door leading to the chiming chamber and the chiming apparatus was interfered with. The' matter was reported to Messrs. Littlejohn and Son, and the damage was immediately repaired.

Sir Walter Buchanan, M.L.C., who is shortly leaving on a visit to the Old Country, was tendered a complimentary "social" by the committee and members of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Mr. Charles Reid (president), who occupied) the chair, referred to tie splendid services rendered by Sir Walter Buchanan to the society, to the Wairarapa, and to New Zealand. A terrific crash sounded in the Dur-ham-street Church yesterday afternoon whilst the Methodist Conference was sitting, says the .Christchurch Press of Friday, and simultaneously the figure of the vioe-president (Mr. J. H. Blackwell) disappeared from view behind a table before which he had been sitting on the dais. Mr. Harry Rands, M.A., arrived by the Moeraki from Sydney yesterday and went South to take hi 3 former position as science master at Waitaki College. Mr. Rands has been over two years in England1 doing munition work. He is a brother of the late Rev. F. Rands, chaplain to the Forces, who succumbed to influenza on the Rhine some days ago. Last Sunday memorial services were held in Marton, in memory of Chaplain Rands. Full congregations attended these services, showing the great esteem in which he was held. He was well known in the Wellington district, and leaves a widow (a daughter of the Eev. J. R. Clark) and two children.

Still further reference to the subject of cargo pillaging was made at the Magistrate's Court this morning. In this latest phase of a very live subject the article stolen was a bottle of beer, valued at Is 6d, and a man named William John Taylor was charged with tho offence. The chief officer of the vessel from which the beer was stolen said he saw the accused man with the bottle in his hand. He (witness)- looked oh this particular theft as a personal injury, as he was in charge of the cargo, and Is 6d would not break the Union Steam Ship Company. Pillaging would have to be stopped by some means or other, as nearly every month on his ship the amount of-about £50 was involved. This. WB*keeßin_hfeb^ : iri^e^?jm3iaßSi ■■
