SEA TRAGEDY
THE BARQUE ARYAN
NAMES OF THE MISSING
THE WORST FEARED.
Up to this morning no word has been received in Wellington of the second boat from the barque Aryan, which was burned at sea on the evening of Christmas Day. The wireless report received on Saturday stated that the' vessel met her doom 300 miles east of the Chathams. That would imply that the, captain's boat and crew made 300 miles to the Chatham Islands port of Kaingaroa, on the north-east side of the island, in just over two days. Opinion in shipping circles is that the distance has been wrongly stated. Possibly some confusion occurred between the arrival of the ship's boat at Kaingaroa and the transmission of the wireless message from Waitangi, on the west side of the island. . . \ The following wireless message was received this morning by the Secretary' of the Post and Telegraph Department (Mr. W. X: Morris) from the wireless operator (Mr. L. H. Steel) at the Chatham Islands :— " First mate's boat not yet picked up. " The names of the missing are:— Charles Graham (first mate) Master Henry Dill ,--, ■ Sidney Mowbray Barraud James Elo Jack Wilson " >*.■■ A. Danielson vf&tyfmHarold Trovik ' '" '; John F. Lindol. " The boat was last spoken on the evening of the 24th, when she was instructed to steer a course for the Chathams. She has provisions and instruments. . "At 5 p.m. yesterday the Captain was still -hopeful. He said that if the boat missed the.island she would set north and should be somewhere west of the Chathams, but during the night a strong westerly gale was blowing. "Locally, the worst is feared. "The fire was first discovered in the flax cargo, between decks, at 2 a..m. on the 24th (ship's time). The ship was abandoned at 11.30 a.m., in approximately latitude 45 south, longtitude 171.10 west, same day " "The names of those landed at Kaingaroa are: Hjalmar Larson, Master Patrick Ryan, J. Jonesen (bosun), Henry Stiffensen, Hjalmar Lndvigsen, John Meissnersen, Oustav/ Ljong, Henry Silverleaf, Emil Andersen, Francis Montague Mills, Charles Vandersluys (cook), Mrs. F. L. Vanderesluy's (stewardess). All are quartered at Kaingaroa Station. Mr. Sydney Barraud, who is in the missing boat, is a son of the late Mr. S. Barraud, for many years local manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Lower Hutt, He was at one time in the service of Messrs. Levin and .Co., went into camp, was discharged medically unfit, and was on a health trip on the | vessel. He is about twenty years of l:age. ' ;> ■
