AMERICAN WHEAT
GOVERNMENTS BAD BARGAIN,
NEW YORK, 27th December. The New York Times's Washington correspondent reports that a serious situation has arisen regarding the wheat crop for 1919. The Agricultural Committee of the House believes that the Government must provide one million dollars to buy the crop, which will be sold at a heavy loss. This situation has arisen because the Government guaranteed the farmers 226 cents per bushel for wheat grown in. 1919. It is anticipated that the Government will be compelled to sell at a loss of almost a dollar a bushel because of the sudden end of the war and of the fact that Australian and Argentine wheat is selling at 135 cents in European markets. The officials expect a very heavy harvest next year, which may compel the Government to sell at 125 cents a bushel.
