Engineer Lieutenant Edward Charles Roi Young, R.N.R., son of Mrs Young, 55, Bowen-street, Wellington, died- on 19th December, at Haslar Hospital, from pneumonia. The late Sub-Lieutenant, who was 29 years of age, left New Zealand with the 28th Reinforcements, but later received a commission in the Navy, serving for some time on H.M.S Teutonic, which was engaged on important work in the danger zone When he enlisted Mr. Young was an engineer on one (ff the Union Steam Ship Company s steamers, and had been for some time m the transport service. He was an exstudent of Canterbury College. Hie brother, Mr John Young, lef^ New Zealand with the Main Body, and after between two and three years' active service in Egypt, was invalided back to New Zealand Deceased's brother-in-law, Lieutenant Arthur Aldridge, New Zealand Railway Engineers, was l""ed_on Gallipoli towards the end of 1915, Ine late Mr. Young was married in 1914 to a daughter of Mr. W Lynskey of North" Canterbury, but his wife died in 1915.
When the late Mr Thomas J Barrat* pined the firm of Peais in 1865 it was a very modest affair, and the under staff in the office consisted of one lady clerk. Uesides bein? a most able business man, Mr Bnrratt'was a keen collector of pictures and considered to be a very souud judge. He. brought his hobby into th» business, and, besides commissioning artists of repute, including Sir John Miliais, to paint pictures to advertise Pears' goods, he. brought out an annual that lias always been a splendid work of art. That for 1918 (received from Meesrt.' Gordon and Gotih) is equal to its predecessors. Its writers are Sir Quiller Couch Keble Howard, Max Pemberton, Rafael Sabatini. David WhiteUw, and Isabel Rayfield. The artists include such well-known names as Fred Pegraih, Claude Sheppevson, Frank Dodd, Steven Spurrier, Rt0.1.,' W R. S. Stott, 8.0.1., and Lewis Jammer. The presentation plates include two mezzotints, by _F. Wheat-ley,, the contemporary and rival of George Mnrla-nd—and Mr. Barratt's collection of Morlanda was ono of the best in the- world^-also a fine mezMgravure, "Apollo and Dapime," by Henrietta Rae.
