CHALLERANGE RAILWAY CUT

LONDON, 28th September.

The French communique states: Our troops to:day, supported by tanks, made a fresh advance on the vtfwiS battlefront. The enemy vainly attempted to arrest our progress. We progressed between Aijberive and St. Marie-a-Py, despite violent ■ counter-attacks. East of ' the Somme we crossed the GhaUerange railway on a front of four kilometres (two miles and a half), advancing over' 2000 yards. North and, north-west of Tahnvo we captared 1 a powerfully-organised centre of v resistance at Gratreuil and Fon-taine-cn-Dorraoise. Furtlior east on the right our lines were earned, to a kilometre south of Bouconvilte, and we conquered Lechelle and Cernay Woods. Since yesterday our advance at certain points has reached five miles. In two days the prisoners .captured by' the ■French exceed tea thousand, and much material has been, iaken. Fine yeaihet

enabled the aviators to co-operate to the fullest extent, throughout the ,battis. Many tons of explosives were dropped in the rear of the battlefield in the daytime, and on cantonments, bivouacs, aerodromes, and stations afc nighttime. Our fighting aeroplanes practically nullified the enemy's observation. We brought down forty-two enemy machines and fired seven balloons.

LONDON, 28th September

A French communique states: This morning.the attack was resumed at 5.30. We.captured the village of Somme-Py (23 miles east of Reims), and carried the heights northward of Fontaine-en-Dor-moise. We have taken more prisoners and guns. The battle continues between the Ailetto and the Aisne. The pressure of our troops north-eastwards of Sancy and vigorous local operations gave us ground and prisoners, including forty officers. A counter-attack northward of Allemant ■ completely failed. Further southward we penetrated the ravine from Jouy to Aizy and occupied these two villages.
