Mr. L. J. F. Garmson, a returned soldier, has announced himself as a candidate for Wellington Central..- Tfiis is a matter of individual enterprise, for the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association is not nominating any candidate in any political contest.: The official non-political/attitude, of the association was stated clearly and emphatically during the Wellington North campawn. , ' : : • The preliminaries for the issue of the writ have been completed. Everything is in readiness ■ for the issue,' which may come any day—and on that day, at 6 p.m., the rolls will be closed. Persons who have a right to enrolment are advised to act quickly. The office of the Registrar (Mr. W. E. Gladstone) foi Wellington Central is in the Government Life Insurance Buildings. The date on which the election wih be held is not yet available, but it is expected that Wednesday, 9th Octobei, will be polling day. Electors who are likely to be absent from the constituency on polling day are advised to make application immediately for absent voters' permits. The law provides that an elector of any, district, at any time during the six-months preceding the issue of a writ for an election, may apply in writing to any Registrar for. a voting permit authorising him to vote outside the district in which he is enrolled. Such application can be attested by a Registrar of Electors, a Justice of. the Peace, a postmaster, or other responsible Government officer.

Mr. M..J. Mack said to;day that., he. would be able to announce his decision this evening or to-morrow. His attitude was not affected by the ballot for an official Labour candidate. '

: By noon to-day the number of claims for enrolment received at the Registrar's office was between 500 and 600.

.It is anticipated that a very' lar^e number of applications will be put in to-morrow as the result of a big sweep through, the district by many canvassers. . . • . \ :
