SEVERAL FRENCH SUCCESSES
STRONG POSITION NEAR ROVE
TAKEN.
LONDON, 17th August. A French communique states: In the region west of Roye we pressed back the enemy by a series'of local attacks. North Of the Avre, the Canadians co-operating, we advanced our line to Goyenconrt and to St. Mard-les-Troi and Laucoiu-t, south of the Avre, and penetrated deeply in the Bois dcs Loges.
A communique issued on 17th August, at 4.15 p.m., states: —There was great artillery activity during the night west of Roye. We have continued, south of the Avre, to progress in the Bois dcs Loges,. and reached the eastern edge. Wo repulsed a strong attack against the Monolith Farm and Carnoy Farm, between the Mate and the- Oise.
LONDON, 18th August. A French communique states: We have continued to progress north and south of the Avre. We captured the strongly-held Caesar's Gump trenches, west of Roye, and pushed our Hues south of the Avre^ to the vicinity of Beauvraignas.. Ove^-1000. prisoners, .jiujaerous.
machine-guns, and much material ha.ye been captured north and south o£ the Avre since yesterday. Further south wo captured Canny-sur-Matz. A strong enemy counter-attack at Carnoy Farm was repulsed. North of the Aisnc, in the region of Antreches, we captured positions on a front of over three miles to a depth of 1500 yards. Two hundred and forty prisoners were captured.
