After the motion had been seconded, the Bey. J. Dickson said that he was not in favour of the motion, not because he was unsympathetic with the Prohibition campaign, but it would mean that the ministers endorsed the granting of compensation to the Trade. Even if the petition were successfully presented, there was no guarantee that the legislation would bo carried. No Parliament could commit another to such a measure. The temperance people would be well advised to have the- necessary legislation passed first. If the present scheme were not successfnl, State control would be floated, .and it would be said that the ministers bad endorsed compensation. The motion was carried.
