MASTEETON, This Day.
The Rev. G. T. Brown, M.A., who is at presentv.on active service, has been granted extended leave by the Wairarapa Presbytery. The appointment of Mr. W. Grundy, as home misskmer at Greytown, has been provisionally extended for another year. The following will represent the Wairarapa Presbytery at the General Assembly to be held in Christchurch in November:—Revs. John McGregor, T. Halliday, R. Welsh, and' K. Catherwood, and Messrs. G. Bruce, W. Grundy, and another to be appointed. The chairman of "directors of the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company stated at the annual meeting yesterday, that owing to the heavy increase in labour and other charges, it was proposed to increase the charge for freezing sheep and lambs by one shilling per head. Councillor A. M'Leod has given notice to move at the next meeting of the Mas; terton Borough Council, "That the council take into. consideration the establishment of a municipal coal supply and delivery." A sum of £152 has already been subscribed in Masterton towards the fund for supplying Christmas . gifts to the soldiers at the front., .
A sum of approximately £150,000 has been expended by the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company in purchasing land and extending the buildings and plant since the war began. Settlers in some parts of the'Wairarapa. are complaining that redl deer have become so numerous that they are a pest. The Masterton Co-operative Dairy Company last season paid out £12,450 17s 9d for butter-fat supplied ,to the local factory.
The Wairarapa Presbytery, has.agreed to the Rev. T. Halliday a,cting as organiser for the Masterton ;No-licen6e League for a few months. The last mail brought advice that the duplicate exhauster for the Masterton gasworks was nearly ready for shipment. ;
The Wellington Farmers' Meat Company hopes to shortly resume the fellrnfingering of wool at the Waingawa works. The directors have, after consideration, decided not to uistal a, car-' bonising plant in the The Masterton County Council has outstanding rates amount to over £6000. The output of coke from the Masterton gasworks last month was no less than 4141 sacks. This was due to the shortage of coal and firewood in the town.
