EVIDENCE OF A COMPLETE SURPRISE
LONDON, 9th August. The Daily Chronicle's correspondent, Mr. Neyinson, says:—"The evidence that our surprise has been startling is shown in the fact that the ruined houses and: dugouts are full of personal belongings, letters, official papers, photographs, books, and clotliing. Row upon row of dugouts and caves had been constructed in the chalky cliffs of the Souim*, reminiscent of the Anzac precipice caves, but some of the shelters in the open plain are from twenty to thirty feeb deop."
