Major J. E. Anderson, M.C., R.E. (lnte Rangiora), has been awarded the Croix do Guerre (French). He is now in England recuperating from a slight attack of gas.

Leigh Norman Younghusband. Relative to the inclusion in the list of C.B.s of the late Brig.-General C. L. K. Campbell, 'C.M.G., Sporting Life refers to this posthumous honour as an "exceptional" one, and describes the late officer as "one of the best all-round sportsmenMn the Army. At Cheltenham College he played in the cricket eleven and was prominent at the sports, while at Sandhurst he won the foot steeplechase in'lß92, a prelude to many victories over the sticks- as a mounted man. He •won the last heavy-weight regimental steeplechase in 1913,. and later, in the year assisted the 16th Lancers to
win the All-Ireland regimental polo tournament."
EMPIRE DAY PRESENTATION.
On the celebration,of Empire Day at Salisbury the staff of the Southern Command co-operated in a large gathering of English, Irish, and Australian regiments. More than a hundred New Zoa~ landers were present, and a dozen or so received decorations won in the field. Brigadier-General H. Hart, C.M.G., D.5.0., commanding at Sling, was present, and the medals were presented by Lieutenant-G-oncral Sir Henry Sclater, Gommanding-in-Chief Southern Command.
The New Zealanders who received thei: medals were : —

Brigadier-General Hart, in the courso of a speech, said lie knew that far away oh the other side of the world they were afc that moment recording a' fresh determination to carry on the war to a finish. He had not previously realised all that was meant by the word "Empire," for the.links binding them together were'not very tangible. He hoped that those responsible for the government of their respective countries would learn the lessons of the war and ensure that the bonds formed on the battlefields of Europe would never be tern asunder,
At the Royal Investiture by the King a.t Aldevshot last week the following New Zealanders received their decorations : — : D.S.C.—Act.-Lt. W. Frame, B.N.R, D.C.M.—Gur. S. Wade, N.Z.F.A. Bar to' M.M.—Cadet H. Hopper, M.G.C.
M.M.— Farrier Cpl. C. Durrani;, Bar. C. Harvey,- &t, S. Vine, all N.Z.F.A. The King has awarded a bar to the Distinguished Conduct Medal to Sergeant S. G. Foot, D.C.M., No. 10/3878, Wellington Regiment, for gallantry and distinguished service in the field:—."For conspicuous gallantry and 'devotion to duty in an attack. Whan his platoon officer became a casualty, he took command of the platoon and led it with great courage a7id initiative. In the attack' on the filial objective ho encountered unexpectedly a very strongly held trench, which he captured, with thirtynine prisoners and seven machine-giuis. He quickly consolidated the captured ground, and held on until wounded. He displayed leadership and gallantry of a high order, and inspired great confidence in his men."
Major J. E. Anderson, M.C., Royal Engineers, has been awarded the French Crois.de Gnerre. Major Anderson was formerly in the Public Works Department at Whangarei, and has served for three years past in the British Army. He has been on short leave in Great Britain.
