EMPIRE'S MEAT PRODUCTION
CO-ORDINATION URGED TO MEET
COMPETITION.
LONDON, Btß 'August. A deputation from the 'Empire Producers' organisation waited on Mr. Hughes, Commonwealth Premier, to urge the development of meat production within tho Empire. Reliance for cheap food must, the deputation contended, rest upon Australia, New Zea^ land and South America. The oom.niittee asked for a preferential scale of tonnage dues applicable only to British ships discharging in t British ports and thus give greater control over the destination of meat. The standard! quality of meat should be established and there should be better co-ordination and organisation to meet the huge American capitalistic competition. They should organise a continuous service of refrigerating steamers to cover the whole of Australian and, New Zealand, supplies. It was desirable that the meat should be handled in British freezing works, carried by British ships, controlled by British capital, and sold in the United Kingdom by British firms.
