INDUSTRIAL UNIONS AND SICK BENEFITS
«p A recent decision by the Supreme Court in a case brought by the Ohinemuri Miners' Union decreed that no industrial organisation could register rules which had in them provision for a sick benefit fund. This has caused some consternation in unionist circles, ■ especially in cases where a sick fund has been in operation. As a result of the decision, trnstees are hesitating before paying claims, and thus an injustice is being' done to widows whose husbands paid regularly into the fund while they were members of the union. The position as it now stands was considered by the Wellington Trades and Labour Council last night, when it was decided that full enquiries should be made with a view of asking tho Government to provide the necessary legislative machinery to validate the funds.
