GOVERNMENT OFFICES

EARLY CLOSING APPROVED BY CABINET. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) has been advised that Cabinet has approved of the suggestion made by the City Council that Government offices in Wellington should close at 4.30 o'clock each "day. This means that they will open at 8.30 o'clock in ths morning, instead of at 9 o'clock as at present. The suggestion was made by the council with a. view to relieving 'the serious overcrowding of the trains which, under existing conditions, occurs daily both in the morning and evening. It is estimated that fully 3000 Civil servants use the trams, and it is hoped that, by spreading the traffic over a longer period, the overcrowding will not be so great. Of course, the innovation will also mean some alteration in the railway and ferry services, and, in order to permit of the necessary readjustments to the train and boat services, the early closing order will not operate immediately However, the new hours are to be observed as early as possible. It is understood that the City Council does not intend to approach the secondary authorities, as has been suggestetl, until the full effect of the new hours in Government offices can be judged.
