HULK KEEPER DROWNED
The body of an elderly man which was found in the harbour near Ngahauranga yesterday morning has been identified as that of Joseph M'Cann, keeper of the Union Steam Ship Company's hulk, C. Tobias. Deceased was a married, man, sixty years of age, and lived on the hulk, while his wife resided at Hataitai. It was deceased's custom to go home on week-ends, and he was last seen by his wife on Friday. It is not known how the deceased got into the water, but it is presumed that he accidentally fell into the sea while attempting to enter the hulk's dinghy to come ashore from the hulk, which was moored off Kaiwarra. An examination of the hulk showed that deceased's cabin was locked. One boot was missing from the deceased's foot, and it is thought that he must have taken it off before he succumbed to exhaustion in his efforts to get back to the dinghy or hulk.' ,A stiff breeze was blowing at the time the mishap is supposed to have occurred, and a rough sea was running in the locality. An inquest will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock.
