AMERICAN COASTAL SHIPS TO BE ARMED TRANSPORT CHASED FOR TWELVE HOURS, ; (AnSTRAUAN-NEW ZEALAND CABIB ASSOCIATION.)^ WASHINGTON, 10th June. . It is officially announced that coastwise vessels will be armed against the U-boats or convoyed by destroyers. Naval craft operating against the Üboata in European waters will not be recalled. Mr. Daniels (Secretary to the Navy) does not confirm the reports that a Vboat was sunk off the American coast. NEW YORK, 9th-June. Ifc IB reported that two /U-boats pursued an American transport for twelve hours. The transport had jjreviou,iy been warned, and had extinguished fcer ligtits. She steamed at full speed, and the U-boat kept up the chase till a destroyer was sighted, when the Bubmarine submerged.
A food ship going from an Atlantio port to Europe was chased 1 by a submarine off the, Virginia Capes. The steamer zigzagged, changed her course, and turned towards a home port. The captain has asked for guns and ammunition to fight the U-boats. The steamer Westerner was attacked by a submarine when one hundred miles off Nantucket' Shoals. She escaped to port. It is reported that U-boats have been seen off the coasts of Maine and Florida, which are the northernmost and southernmost States. Incoming Vessels rapidly sped to harbours .
