AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS

ENORMOUS PROPORTION! OF UNFITS MATTER TO BE INVESTIGATED. (Received February 26, 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE., This Day. Of 49,7fi4 members of the Expeditionary Forces who have returned to the Commonwealth up to the 31st December lastj 10,333 saw no service. They failed to pass the standard set by the medical authorities in England, and were sent back as unfit. The Minister for Defence (Senator Pearce) is perplexed at this result of conflicting opinions as to tho medical standard. On the grounds of the cost of sending the men Home and the detrimental effect on recruiting, it cannot be allowed to continue. The Minister has approved the sending of the DirectorGeneral of Medical Services (who will be assisted by other experts), to England and France to fully investigate the matter.
