THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(BI "SIR MNCEIOT.")

Glenopal, who scored his most important victory to date in the Takapuna Cup, worth 600 soys to the winner, on Saturday last, is owned by the successful Waikato trainer, R. Hannon> who also owns King Lupin, Tindpai, Mill o' Gowrie, and other performers In the Auckland district. Last season Glenopal won the Taumarunui Cup and the- President's Handicap, a mile and ■ a-quarter, at Ellerslie in^the autumn. • In the lastnamed event he carried 171b overweight to secure the services of H. Robinson, who usually rides for Hannon's stable. Glenopal was sired by Glengowrie, a Soult horse bred by Mr. Andrew Laing, formerly of Foxton and Woodville, now of. Inglewood. Glengowrie is a y full brother of Lass of Gowrie (who won the Pearce Handicap and other races in the colours of Mr. Laing, and is dam of Maid o' Gowrie). Unlike her relative Glengowrie, a heavy-topped horse and difficult to train, was not a success as a racing proposition, but he has made good as a successful sire in the Waikato district, where he took up stud duty. Uncle Ned, who defeated Colonel Soult and others in the principal event at Takapuna in the spring, was again in the money. The failure of the imported horses Polydamon and Cynic, who showed good form at Ellerslie earlier in the month, was a disappointment to their followers.

A. Goodman leaves for the South on Thursday with Rose Pink and Preface. They are to race at the Canterbury and Dunedin Meetings. Pervola hae been turned out for a spell and Prince Delaware is the only horse H. Kingan has in commission- at present. He has been engaged' at Wanganui. Trentham Rose broke down on Friday morning, and will not, in. consequence, accompany her stable-mates to Pahiatua. Stilts (General Soult—Maid of the Forest), who scored his first win in the Maiden Handicap at Takapuna in November, ran second in the Zealandia Handicap on the same course on Saturday to Muneter (Spalpeen—Success), who retain* his form well.

Blairfinde was accepted for at Pahiatua, but will not be Bent up. The Golfer will be the only member of ■■ J. M'Laughlin's team to make the trip, and he may be submitted to A auction there. The boxes at Endeavour Lodge formerly occupied by Matilda- and Ayah will be filled by the Boniform and Demosthenes fillies purchased by Messrs. Riddiford Bros, in Christchurch.

Ditto (Spalpeen—Repetition) carried top weight to victory in the Hauraki Maiden Hurdles at Takapuna on Saturday. She was placed in her last fom 1 starts last season, and also ran second to Silver Lupin at Takapuna in thn spring. A. Goodman hae the bay yearling colt by Autumnus^—Rene on the lead at Trentham. ' \

J. Ayres is talcing Justification through to Pahiatua for the Maiden Plate. He shaped pleasingly in a half-mile sprint on Saturday morning with Battle Array. The new owner of ' Matilda is Mr. Eric -Russell, who is at present in camp. She has been entered- at the Dunedin Meeting, and goes South in charge of H. Telford. She will afterwards go into the stable of A. M'lvot, tho Southland trainer, who also hae the American-bred Mohawk, belonging to Mr. Buseell. J. Ayres on Saturday last returned War Storm to his owner.

• C. Pritchard is'taking Thoughtful and Advanceful through to the' Pahiatua Meeting., Whakatina's box has been cancelled.

Step (Mystification—Stepdaughter) has so far failed to win a race in the Auckland district. On Saturday he ran second to Keystone (Marble Arch—Monoquil) in the Ti'ial Handicap at Takapuna. ■ Mr. J. M'Glashan, caretaker at Trentham, has been laid up for the past few days, but will 1 soon be about again. After racing on the second «day at Trentham one of Probation's forelegs filled slightly. She was worked this morning, and walked away apparently quite sound again. Cardrona was expected to run prc4nirfi>. ently in the Stewards' Handicap At Takapuna on Saturday. The best the chestnut gelding t could do was to run second to Fio-rinuala (Spalpeen—Waimangu), a full sister v-to Glendalough and other performers. ' ?

Silver 'Link, winner of the Calliope Handicap, (or two year-olds, at Takapuna on Saturday, was bred ait the Waikanae ■ Stnd, „, by Achilles—Secret Link (a mare by Bezonian .that J.- W. Lowe jused to train at Trentham for Mr. Alf. Harris). Silver Link was among the batch of yearlings sold at Auckland last December, and was purchased by Mr. A. Alexander for 81) guineas.
