DULLER WEATHER

Cloudy. and overcast condition* prevailed last night, .with strong southeasterly -winds. To-day has been cooler, with a threatening outlook, the day breaking with intermittent driving mists and murky skiee. Dulland misty weather ie predicted in many parts, and drizzling rain is probable.

A strange discovery was (the Christchurch Sun says) made on Sunday mom- ■ mg at the Oxford-terrace Baptist Church, Christchnrch, of which the Rev. J. J. North is pastor. It appears that an attempt had been made to set fire to the church, and the fact that it was unsuo- ! cessful was. due more to good fortune than to lack of deliberation in -the preparations. 'On the east side of the church, towards the southern end, there is a door leading into a small:'room, which is used by the choir. This door) I had apparently been treated with benzine, or some other highly-inflammable spirit, and,a quantity of rags, also soaked in spirit, had been placed on the doorstep. A light had been applied, and it is,apparent from the condition of the door that the church had a very narrow escape. The bottom part of: the door is charred, and the upper portion badly singed. ' Had the fire got past the door it would in all probability have communicated 'with the pipe organ, and.in that 'case nothing could, have saved the church from destruction. Fortunately the t rags and oil burnt themselves out, the spirit used haying been of a too volatile character to burn long. It is stated that about 1.30 on Sunday morning the Rev. Mr. North was called from his bed to answer an " urgent' telephone call. The question put to him over the wire was, "Has 6 o'clock closing been carried yet?" There may have been some connection between this alleged humorist and the incendiary attempt on the church. .
